Local MP meets with education think tank

Stephanie Peacock, Member of Parliament for Barnsley East, recently met with LKMco, an education and youth think tank, which focuses on helping policy makers and other groups to support young people.

Stephanie discussed her work with schools and Further Education colleges in Barnsley and after the meeting she commented: “As a former teacher, I know just how important education and a young person’s formative years are in shaping their future opportunities and life chances.

“That’s why I always work so closely with our local schools and colleges here in Barnsley on issues from T Levels to apprenticeships to exclusions.

“It was great to meet with LKMco to discuss the work they do, the work I do with schools and FE colleges in our area, and ways we can work together in future.’

Local MP calls for more funding for dementia care

Barnsley East MP Stephanie Peacock joined the Alzheimer’s Society photography exhibition in Parliament recently to showcase the human cost of the dementia care crisis.

The photo exhibition, ‘Dementia Care: The Crisis Behind Closed Doors’, depicts the human cost of a care system that the charity claims is unfair, unsustainable and in urgent need of reform up and down the country.

Stephanie met with people affected by dementia to hear about how the crisis has affected them and their families.

Alzheimer’s Society is calling for a Dementia Fund in the upcoming Spending Review to end the dementia penalty, bringing fairness into the system and improving quality of care.

Said Stephanie “I am proud to stand with people affected by dementia and make the case for more funding for dementia care in the upcoming spending review.

“One million people will have dementia by 2021 and it is vital that we are able to deliver high quality dementia care to everyone that needs it.”

Stephanie has also joined 80 charities in calling for better support for disabled people.

She recently attended a Parliamentary event hosted by the Disability Benefit Consortium (DBC), which represents 80 national disability organisations.

The DBC has recently undertaken research that found changes to the welfare system over the past ten years have left disabled people financially four times worse off than non-disabled people.

The research describes how many people have experienced cuts to their benefits, and disabled people have lost on average payments of around £1,200 each year because of changes to the system, compared to an average of £300 for people without a disability.

Households with one disabled adult and one disabled child have lost out the most, with average losses of over £4,300 per year.

For disabled people, these benefits provide vital financial support to help them with the extra costs they face and so when it is taken away they do not only lose money, they lose access to transport, their independence, and in some cases, their jobs.

The DBC claims that the failure to include disability premiums as part of Universal Credit, and assessment criteria that poorly represents the needs of disabled people are just two examples of the problems that are leaving disabled people worse off.

The Barnsley MP heard from speakers at the event about some of the issues disabled people face.

The DBC, which represents disabled people and people with long-term conditions including Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and mental health is calling on the Government to make urgent improvements to the system to enable a fairer benefits system that works for everyone.

Said Stephanie: “Damaging cuts to the welfare system over the best part of the last decade by the Tories have removed a vital safety net many disabled people depend on.

“The system should be there to help vulnerable people, but under this Government the impact on their health and well-being has been devastating.

“I’m supporting calls by the DBC for urgent reform to our welfare system to provide support for those who need it, not force disabled people to shoulder the burden of Tory austerity.”

MP meets next generation of local radio stars

Stephanie Peacock, MP for Barnsley East, met with some of Barnsley’s up-and-coming radio talents in Parliament recently (see picture).

As part of a reception hosted by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Commercial Radio, Kyle Walker, Karl Wellbelove and Matty Hugill visited Parliament to celebrate local radio.

The three Barnsley residents feature on The Vibe Radio, and host an award-winning football feature, ‘Everything Football’.

The Vibe Radio is an online radio platform supported by Barnsley College, and specialises in indie music alongside a host of other features and programmes.

Everything Football airs every Friday at 3pm on The Vibe.

Said Stephanie: “Barnsley is jam-packed full of talent, and The Vibe is a fantastic local initiative that gives a platform for many young people to demonstrate their skills.

“Kyle, Karl and Matty’s football show has earned rave reviews and an award, and their visit to Parliament was a great opportunity to congratulate them in person.

“Backed by the talent and passion of young people in Barnsley and supported by Barnsley college, I’ve no doubt The Vibe will continue to experience great success.”

Stephanie also spoke recently at the Barnsley Academy celebratory breakfast.

The yearly event, held to celebrate the achievements of the Academy’s outstanding students, was also attended by local councillors Wayne Johnson and John Clarke, and the South Yorkshire Police Commander for Barnsley, Scott Green.

During her speech, Stephanie congratulated the students on their success, spoke about the importance of hard work in achieving your goals, and spoke about the real difference young people in Barnsley can make in their communities.

She said:“It was a real pleasure to attend the Barnsley Academy celebratory breakfast. It was great to meet so many talented, dedicated young people, and to hear about their outstanding achievements at Barnsley Academy over the last year.

“We’re so fortunate that, here in Barnsley, we have so many brilliant, hard working young people who are keen to make a difference in their community, and I can’t wait to see what they achieve in future.”

Hospice wins £1,000 Movement for Good award

Barnsley Hospice has won a £1,000 Movement for Good award thanks to nominations from the public.

The hospice was nominated to win a £1,000 boost as part of specialist insurer Ecclesiastical’s Movement for Good awards, which is giving £1 million to charities this summer.

The donation will help the hospice provide specialist care for people affected by a life-limiting illness, including cancer, motor neurone disease and heart disease.

Janet O’Hara, grants, trusts and legacies fundraiser at Barnsley Hospice, said: “We are delighted to receive a donation from this initiative, which will directly benefit the patients we look after.

“We’d like to thank Ecclesiastical and all those who took the time to nominate us. Without donations like this, we would not be able to provide the vital care and support we do for the people of Barnsley.”

Members of the public were invited to nominate causes close to their hearts, with 500 gifts of £1,000 available. Barnsley Hospice was one of more than 7,000 charities which was nominated by 98,000 members of the public to be in with a chance of winning a financial boost.

Mark Hews, group chief executive at Ecclesiastical, said: “As a company whose purpose is to contribute to the greater good of society, charitable giving is at the heart of our business. We know that £1,000 can make a huge difference to the incredible work that charities do and we’re looking forward to seeing how this financial boost will change lives for the better.”

Hospice in-patient unit transformation is complete

A major project to transform the in-patient unit at Barnsley Hospice has been completed.

All ten bedrooms, and communal areas, including the bathroom and corridors, have been refurbished to provide a more comfortable, calm experience for patients and their families.

The bedrooms have specialist beds to improve patient comfort; furniture and décor to create a peaceful and homely environment, and new doors and windows with integral blinds that create a much lighter and brighter space.

Each room has piped oxygen and mood lighting along with large-screen smart televisions, and wireless headphones to enhance the patient experience. They also have new en-suite wet rooms or wash rooms, air conditioning and new flooring.

A designated overnight stay facility has also been added to the in-patient unit, which is now available for family members to use as and when needed.

Work began in October last year and took place over four phases to allow in-patient unit services to continue. The unit is now fully open, and the hospice is welcoming patients to the upgraded facilities.

The refurbishments cost £500,000. A grant of £300,000 was received from the Morrisons Foundation, the charitable arm of the Bradford-based supermarket chain, and the rest was made up of grants from other charitable trusts and donations from the Barnsley community.

Julie Ferry, CEO of Barnsley Hospice, said: “Our aim is to ensure patients are as comfortable as possible when they stay with us, and these upgraded facilities allow us to deliver the highest standards of care. It’s important for families to benefit from a home-from-home environment that provides real comfort during difficult times.

We are immensely grateful to the organisations and individuals who helped to fund this transformation project.”

This is the first time the bedrooms have been fully refurbished since the in-patient unit opened in 2001. Barnsley-based building contractors CD Potter and Sons were appointed to carry out the work.

A ceremony to officially launch the upgraded facilities will be held in July, as part of the hospice’s 25th anniversary celebrations.

  • Photograph, by Stan Plus Stan Two,  shows the upgraded facilities.

Bespoke gin just the tonic for Hospice anniversary

A Barnsley distillery is launching a bespoke gin to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Barnsley Hospice and raise money for its care.

Darton-based Waterton’s Reserve Gin has hand-crafted the spirit with 25 botanicals and gifted the initial batch to the charity to sell at their Peaky Blinders Ball this Friday, 14 June.

Guests at the event will be the first to taste the gin, which is made at the West Riding Distillery in Darton with spring water from Denby Dale.

Bottles will be available to purchase in sizes of 70cl and 20cl from Bottle & Co in Mapplewell and the owner, Jay Ashton, has agreed to donate all profits to Barnsley Hospice. It will also be available at a selection of pubs and bars around Barnsley, including The Talbot and The Wentworth Arms in Mapplewell.

Dave Owens, distiller and founder, Waterton’s Reserve Gin, said: “As soon as I heard it was the hospice’s 25thanniversary I thought it would be a great idea to craft a gin with 25 botanicals, which is quite a complicated process!

“I’ve only recently moved to Barnsley but I’ve heard so many wonderful things about the hospice so I thought this would be a brilliant opportunity to help them.

“Check the gin shelves when you’re out and about as you won’t just enjoy a fantastic and very small batch of gin; you’ll also be raising money for a great charity.”

Following the Peaky Blinders Ball, a percentage of each bottle or measure sold will be donated to the hospice and the distillery will make no profit from the sales.

Simon Atkinson, corporate fundraiser at Barnsley Hospice, said: “We’re really touched that this gin has been made just for us, and have seen first-hand just how much time and effort has gone into its production. We’ve also tasted it and can confirm it’s delicious!

“We hope people around Barnsley will support us by buying a bottle or ordering a measure, and then raise a glass for our birthday.”

Since opening its doors in 1994, Barnsley Hospice has cared for thousands of people affected by progressive life-limiting illness, including cancer, motor neurone disease and heart disease.

It is celebrating its 25th anniversary with events throughout 2019 and tickets are still available for the Peaky Blinders Ball, which takes place this Friday, 14 June, at The Fairway in Dodworth. Please visit www.barnsleyhospice.org or call 01226 244 244.

The anniversary gin is hand distilled by Waterton’s Reserve Gin, a sister company of Nailmaker Brewing Co.

Nailmaker Brewing Co. will be launching an anniversary ale for the hospice at the Wortley Beer Festival, which takes place 28-30 June.

Barnsley Hospice needs to raise £2.2m a year through the support of local people and businesses to care for patients and their families – in addition to £1.6m funding from the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

Bubble Rush completes successful season for fund-raising footballers

Members of a South Yorkshire youth football team are taking part in the Barnsley Hospice Bubble Rush to round off a season of fund-raising for the charity.

The 5km fun run, which sees participants blasted with coloured bubbles around the route, returns to Locke Park on Sunday 21 July, and the Cudworth Pinfold Pumas Under 13s team (pictured) are entering for the first time.

The event acts as a celebration for the Pumas after they won the league title, having lost only two games since September. They also finished cup runners-up to complete a successful season.

Ben Rowe, who manages the team, said: “We thought it would be a great way to round off what has been a fantastic year for the team. All 17 of them are taking part which is great.

“One of my friends has kindly paid the entry fees for the whole team, so everything else we raise in sponsorship can now go directly towards hospice care which is amazing. I’m sure everyone will have fun and raise money for a great local cause at the same time.”

The Pumas’ latest fundraising for the charity comes after Ben, 30, held a race night last summer to raise enough money to pay for football shirts emblazoned with the Barnsley Hospice logo. His team have been promoting the hospice in every game they have played since then.

Ben, a taxi driver from in Athersley North, has supported the hospice since his mother, Bev Rowe, died there from bowel cancer when he was just 16. Some of the players also have personal connections to the hospice.

Ben said: “When my mum was cared for at the hospice, what surprised me was what a happy and positive place it was, despite there being so many poorly people. The staff were fantastic and supported the whole family too, not just my mum.

“We just want to give something back to make sure that other people are able to receive that exceptional level of care. The Barnsley community always support each other, and I think they recognise the importance the hospice has to the town – that’s what it’s all about.”

Martyn Hughes, events fund-raiser at Barnsley Hospice, said: “We’re really touched by the fund-raising efforts of Ben and the team. It’s been great to have our profile raised in the local community with the shirt sponsorship throughout the season, so for the team to be doing the Bubble Rush as well is fantastic.

“Their support, along with the rest of the Barnsley community, makes a huge contribution towards being able to provide care for the families who need us.”

The Barnsley Hospice Bubble Rush is now in its third year and has raised over £50,000 in sponsorship since it was introduced in 2017.

Tickets now available at a cost of £20 per adult and £10 per child. Family tickets at £50 are also available. The entry fee includes a t-shirt to wear during the event and a medal at the end of the course. To enter, visit www.barnsleyhospice.org or call 01226 244244.

Barnsley Hospice has to raise £2.2m each year to care for patients and their families. A further £1.6m is provided by the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

Volunteers encouraged to join Hospice events team

Willing volunteers who can’t give up their time regularly are being encouraged to join the events team at Barnsley Hospice.

The charity holds a range of large and small-scale events throughout the year, including Bubble Rush, It’s a Knockout, Paws in the Park and its Golf Day. Events team volunteers are required to man stalls, supervise participants and carry out general organisational work. Anyone aged 18 and over can sign up, and no previous experience is needed.

Barbara Cronin, volunteer co-ordinator at Barnsley Hospice, said: “Our army of events volunteers are vital. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to hold the volume of events we do every year. It’s the best way for people who can’t donate time regularly to get involved with volunteering.

“Once you sign up, you will be on a list of people we can contact if we need help on an ad hoc basis. It’s ideal for people who work full time as many of the events take place on weekends.”

The appeal coincides with Volunteers Week, a national initiative organised by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO). It takes place every year from 1-7 June and aims to highlight the contribution made by volunteers to charities and voluntary groups across the UK.

One of the themes for this year is to emphasise how much volunteering can benefit a person’s own well-being, as well as the people they are helping.

“I’ve always said volunteering has to be a two-way thing; the volunteer has to get what they want out of it too,” Barbara added. “It’s rewarding to see people having fun and becoming part of the team.”

Over 250 volunteers of all ages give up their time for Barnsley Hospice and contributed over 30,000 hours of their time last year.

Jean Thompson-Banks, 74, (pictured) is a volunteer who helps the fundraising team to coordinate the events team volunteers. She said: “I feel really valued as a volunteer and I’ve made some good friends, who I also see outside of the hospice.

“People often ask me how I can volunteer at a hospice, ‘where people are dying’, but they don’t understand what it’s like here. It’s a place of fun and of life.”

To find out more about volunteering for the events team, or other volunteering opportunities, call 01226 323616 or emailbarbara.cronin@barnsley-hospice.org.

Barnsley Hospice provides specialist care for anyone in the borough with a life-limiting illness, including cancer, motor neurone disease and heart disease. It has ten beds for inpatient care and provides day care at the on-site Limes Support and Therapy Centre.

Local MP teams up with Sport England to bring funding to Barnsley

Stephanie Peacock, MP for Barnsley East, met with Sport England in Parliament recently to discuss opening up specialised funding for sports and recreation in coalfield areas like Barnsley.

The discussions surrounded the national organisation’s ‘Community Asset Fund’, which will seek to deliver £2m for sports and recreation projects in former mining communities.

The funding is part of Sport England’s aim to increase the health and physical activity in coalfield areas, and local MP Peacock is hoping plenty of that money finds its way to groups in Barnsley.

She received a briefing from the organisation on how to increase the number of successful applications from Barnsley, and is now offering to help support local miners’ welfare clubs apply.

Said Stephanie: “Barnsley, like so many other coalfield communities across the country, has too often in the past been left behind and ignored when it comes to funding from the Government for local sports and recreation projects.

“The money delivered by Sport England could make a huge difference to organisations and miners’ welfare clubs in Barnsley, and the many people who use their facilities to keep active and healthy.

“I’ll be reaching out to local groups and encouraging applications so as much of this money as possible can reach Barnsley, and I encourage any organisation thinking of applying to contact me for any help required.”

Friends team up to take on ‘Benidorm or Bust’ challenge for charity

A group of friends drove from Barnsley to Benidorm in £500 cars to raise money for Barnsley Hospice.

Tracey Wainwright from Staincross, along with her husband and six friends, took on the 1,500-mile challenge between 15 and 18 May as part of the ‘Benidorm or Bust’ charity rally.

Almost 200 teams met at Dover and drove across France and Spain over four days, all to raise funds for the charity of their choice.

The group of eight from Barnsley were separated into two teams – the women’s team, Disco Divas, in a £330 Jaguar S-Type, and the men’s team, Skared, in a £510 Mercedes E-class.

Team Disco Divas made it as far as the Pyrenees before their Jaguar suffered gearbox failure. They were forced to continue in a hire car, but the Mercedes soldiered on to reach the finish line on the Costa Blanca.

Tracey, 51, said: “It started as a mad idea one of us had last summer, but we decided to go ahead and do it.

“It turned into an adventure for old people! The camaraderie between the teams was fantastic and the atmosphere was like nothing I’ve experienced before – it was just pure joy. When we broke down about five other teams stopped to see what they could do to help.

“We’re very grateful to Tapfreight in Carlton and Enterprise Garage in Barnsley who kindly sponsored us.”

The teams raised a total of £1200, which will be split between Barnsley Hospice, Wakefield Hospice and Macmillan.

Tracey added: “One of the team, Christopher Lilleyman, has just been diagnosed with bowel cancer, and thankfully he was well enough to join us, but we know how important hospice care is for people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

“My previous husband was also cared for by Barnsley Hospice when he was terminally ill, and they gave him his dignity back. They supported me and my children in the darkest of times, so that’s why we want to give something back.”

Vicky Stead, community fundraiser at Barnsley Hospice, said: “It looks like the guys had a fantastic time, and we’re hugely grateful to them for choosing the hospice as one of their supporting charities.

“We’re thankful for the support we receive from all corners of the community and it’s because of people raising money through events like this that we are able to continue caring for the families that need us.”

Barnsley Hospice provides specialist care for anyone in the borough with a life-limiting illness, including cancer, motor neurone disease and heart disease. The charity has to raise £2.2m a year, in addition to £1.6m funding provided by the NHS CCG.

Ten-year-old completes Three Peaks challenge in aid of Barnsley Hospice

A Barnsley schoolboy was part of a group of fundraisers who took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge to raise money for Barnsley Hospice.

Mason Coles, 10, was the youngest member of the nine-strong Little and Large team who climbed Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in under 12 hours last Saturday. Mason, who is a pupil at Holy Trinity School in Athersley, has raised £580 for the hospice.

Mason’s dad, Gavin Coles, said: “It made me so proud and emotional – he took it all in his stride. People we passed were shocked when they saw someone of Mason’s age doing the Three Peaks – many of them donated on the spot when they found out what he was doing. He is an exceptional young man.”

‘Girl Power’ campaign wins national award for Berneslai Homes

Berneslai Homes are celebrating after their ‘Girl Power’ campaign won the Best Diversity Scheme at the national 24housing Diversity in housing awards.

Berneslai Homes’ Girl Power campaign aims to encourage females to apply for a variety of vacancies, including gas plumbers, electricians, joiners, bricklayers and apprenticeships.

In April 2018 they held their first ever ‘Girl Power’ event to showcase the exciting opportunities that are available to women in our construction division. There were interactive stalls for each trade, where staff and apprentices spoke passionately to delegates about the company and their roles.

Following the event delegates were then invited to a tour around the construction depot, giving them an insight into the work they do.

Berneslai Homes now have an annual event to increase their influence in Barnsley and reach out to more females through schools, work experience, wider communications and making links with other like-minded organisations.

Berneslai Homes Head of HR and Organisational Development Amanda Bennett said: “We are delighted to win this award. The Construction Industry is well known for being predominately male!  At Berneslai Homes we wanted to do something about this and encourage women to apply for our trade vacancies and apprenticeships. Women now equate to 5.8% of our construction workforce, which is higher than Barnsley’s average of only 2.1%.”

Wheelers’ 70th birthday celebrations begin at the Tour de Yorkshire

Birdwell Wheelers, the second-oldest cycling club in the Barnsley area, began their 70th birthday celebrations at a stall on Market Hill prior to the Tour de Yorkshire men’s race last Friday.

Barnsley’s Mayor, Cllr Steve Green, was present to cut a commemorative cake which was then given away to the crowds which had turned out in numbers, despite a cold and wet day, to watch the start of the race.

Following the cutting of the cake members of the club rode a processional bike ride around the town hall, returning to the stall before the start of the men’s race.

Wheelers’ President, Christine Minto – who has held seven women’s national ‘time trial’ cycling records from 10 miles to 24 hours – said: “It is a great honour for the club’s current members to continue the work of our founders in supporting all forms of cycle racing and leisure cycling in Barnsley and the surrounding districts.

“The first meeting to form a club was held in 1949 and we are proud to be able to share this commemoration with local people watching the Tour de Yorkshire stages today.  Several of the founder members gave many years of service and support for the club – Jim Carr, Johnny Lovell, Derrick Ogden, Melvyn Fisher and Graham Taylor.”

Further events to celebrate the anniversary will take place later in the year.

Last Thursday saw the second of the club’s three 15 mile time trials at Thurnscoe. Four members – Kath Brankin, Paul Heggie, Dave Scargill and Phil Adams – were joined by visitors Chris Venters and Chris Scott.

Fastest Wheeler was Dave Scargill in 45m 49s with Heggie 2nd on 48m 42s. Ist on handicap was Kath Brankin in 34m 19s. Heggie now leads the handicap competition with one round remaining.

Tuesday, 14th May, sees the start of the club’s 5 mile series of time trials at Thurgoland. First rider is off at 7pm. Visitors are welcome.

On Saturday Trevor Mayne rode in the Rossington Wheelers 25 mile Open time trial at Hatfield Woodhouse. In atrocious windy conditions he recorded a time of 1h 0m 53s placing him 10th overall and 2nd in the 50-59 category.

On Sunday Dave Scargill rode in the 32 miles Steve Gutteridge Road Race over three laps of a circuit near Macclesfield under the auspices of the LVRC (League of Veteran Racing Cyclists). Five riders got away on the first lap and the narrow roads meant the bunch were unable to mount a chase. Scargill finished well up in the bunch sprint at the end.

Sunday saw many of the club’s members out on Yorkshire roads to watch the final stage of the Tour of Yorkshire.

Dave Hudson, Steve Myatt, Phil Adams and Chris Jenkins rode to Halifax while Austin Watson and Rodger Holmes rode a shorter loop to Snaith.

Sunday’s club run is to Hope in the Peak District.  Meet at Brewers Fayre roundabout Wombwell at 9am. Visitors are welcome.

More details on this and all the above can be found on the club’s website:

Memories of 1967-68 as Reds’ hopes of adding the title to promotion are dashed

Bristol Rovers 2, Barnsley 1

(SkyBet League One)

Memories of 51 years ago were stirred for older Barnsley supporters as the Reds’ bid for a league title were dashed by a last-day defeat at Bristol.

The previous Saturday Daniel Stendel’s side had completed a season unbeaten at home for the first time since the 1967-68 campaign,. On that occasion they won promotion from the old Division Four by finishing runners-up to Luton Town.

History has repeated itself in 2019. The Reds went into the final day level on points with the Hatters, but with an inferior goal difference, which meant they had to better the Luton result or, if both teams won, exceed their rivals’ winning margin by five goals, if they were to add the title to their automatic promotion prize.

It was always asking a lot, and any hopes of a fairy-tale conclusion to what has been a dream season were virtually dashed just before half-time, when central defender Liam Lindsay was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Luton were leading visitors Oxford United 1-0 at the time, so defeat for them was unlikely, while Barnsley’s chances of bridging that five-goal gap had been reduced from fanciful to zero.

The half-time substiutions of defenders Dimitri Cavare and Zeki Fryers for striker Kieffer Moore and attacking left-sided midfield player Mamadou Thiam made it obvious that head coach Daniel Stendel had decided to take the only sensible option – cling on to the one-goal advantage provided by an early Moore header and hope that somehow or other Oxford could stage a game-changing  come-back at Kenilworth Road.

It proved too much, however, for the Barnsley ten, and a stoppage time goal saw them taste defeat for only the second time in  21 matches.

Disappointing, yes. But it mattered little. Not like last season, when a final day defeat confirmed relegation to League One. What a wonderful change has been brought about by the new man in charge in leading the Reds back to the Championship at the first attempt.

In doing so the team has broken club records for points totals and clean sheets while delighting their supporters with some thrilling football. That will live in the memory long after the disappointment of this defeat has been erased by the passage of time.

As Stendel said: “Our big goal was to get back to the Championship, so I am very happy.”

So are the fans!

Stendel made just one change for the visit to Bristol, Moore replacing Jacob Brown and playing up front with Cauley Woodrow, Mike Bahre switching from a central position to take Brown’s place on the right flank.

Rovers posed the bigger threat in the opening exchanges, but it was Barnsley who took the lead in the 12th minute when Cameron McGeehan set up the initial chance for Thiam, whose header was beaten away by Adam Smith in the home goal only for Moore to follow up with another header to notch his first goal since his come-back from a nasty head injury.

Liam Sercombe sent a volley just wide as the home team hit back but it was Alex Rodman who posed the biggest threat to the Barnsley defence and not only did he score both his side’s goals, he was also involved in the two incidents which completely changed the complexion of the game.

First he was brought down by Lindsay near the half-way line as he attempted to break away and a minute before the interval he found himself on the receiving end of another rash tackle from the Barnsley defender, who was given another yellow card – and then a red – by referee Darren Drysdale.

The double substitution at the start of the second half was designed to boost the Reds’ defensive capabilities and enable the team to cling on to their one-goal advantage and for  a while it looked like the tactics would be successful, although they were rescued by a superb double save from goalkeeper Adam Davies.

But then, in the 71st minute, that man Rodman popped up again, this time to net the equaliser after his first attempt had been parried by Davies.

To their credit, the Reds managed to weather the storm which followed the Rovers’ breakthrough and they went close to restoring their lead when Woodrow was narrowly wide on two occasions.

They could not quite make it to the final whistle, however, and the home team snatched victory in the second minute of stoppage time when man of the match Rodman was left unmarked at the far post to net the winner following a swift counter-attack.

Defeats for both Portsmouth and Sunderland tonight means that Barnsley have been promoted back to the Championship at the first attempt.

They are level on points with Luton Town, who are also promoted; four points clear of Portsmouth and six ahead of Sunderland with only one game to play.

Barnsley Round Table donation provides boost for Hospice lymphoedema service

The lymphoedema service at Barnsley Hospice has been boosted thanks to a donation of almost £3,000 from the Barnsley Round Table.

The money, raised from the club’s annual bonfire event in the town’s Locke Park, has been used to buy specialist lymphoedema equipment to help patients living with the long-term condition.

Lymphoedema causes swelling in the body’s tissues and can be a side effect of cancer surgery. Barnsley Hospice offers a self-management and support service – the only specialist service of its kind in the borough.

The £2,899 donation from the Barnsley Round Table has enabled the charity to invest in a new pump and garment system to help reduce symptoms associated with lymphoedema and improve quality of life for patients.

The donation was made in memory of long-standing and highly supportive club member Roger Potts, who lived in Oxspring. Roger died in December 2018 after being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in December 2017.

Roger’s family visited the hospice last week to see the new equipment and hear how it will help patients. A spokesperson from the Barnsley Round Table said: “Roger was a fantastic member for many years, helping raise lots of money for the town he loved and donating to many good causes for Barnsley people.

“Roger is remembered as a great friend to many past and present Round Table members, and as a kind and very generous man. It was an honour to donate this money in his memory and we are proud to help make a difference to such an important charity within our community.”

Janet O’Hara, grants, trusts and legacies fundraiser at Barnsley Hospice, added: “We’re thrilled that the Round Table chose to support our charity, and this is a true example of money raised in the community being used to help others within it. The new equipment will make a big difference to our patients living with lymphoedema and we’d like to thank the club and everyone who supported their bonfire event in November last year.”

Barnsley MP completes London marathon in aid of local charity

Stephanie Peacock, MP for Barnsley East, completed the London Marathon in the capital on Sunday to raise money for local charity Barnsley Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Services (BSARCS).

The Member of Parliament joined over 42,000 runners along the famous course, crossing the finish line of her first ever marathon in just over six hours and reaching her target of £1,000.

BSARCS is the sole group in Barnsley the provides specialist services to people affected by sexual abuse, sexual assault, rape, and any kind of sexual violence. Working with women, men and children, they have helped around 1,500 people in the last year alone.

Said Stephanie: “Barnsley Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Services is a fantastic local charity that does incredible work for people in our community, and I’m so happy to have completed the marathon and helped raise funds for them.

“I’ve never run anywhere near 26 miles before, but the kindness of the crowds gathered along the route and generosity of those who have donated made the sore legs worth it – so thank you to everyone in Barnsley for your support.

“Though every step after around 15 miles hurt I took each one for BSARCS, and the thought of what a difference the donations will make to some of the most vulnerable people across Barnsley kept me going.”

Lynne Casserly, Development Manager at Barnsley Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Services, said: “We would like to thank Stephanie and everyone who has supported her in raising money for BSARCS.”
