‘Smiles better’ pledge from schoolchildren

Healthwatch Barnsley have worked with 188 young people at five local primary schools on the ‘I pledge project’ to promote dental hygiene.

This is a project that Healthwatch Barnsley’s Children and Young People’s Engagement Worker, Jade Bligh, has worked on in partnership with Public Health and the Oral Health Advisory Group.

As part of the project year 6 pupils attended an information session on the importance of oral hygiene and visiting a dentist. The young people were also able to share their views and opinions about visiting their dentist.

Towards the end of the session the young people all signed a slip where they pledged to brush their teeth twice a day and visit their dentist on a regular basis.

They were also given a comic strip style flyer to take home with information on the importance of dental hygiene designed by Healthwatch Barnsley’s volunteer Junior Champions.

Jade said: “I really enjoyed working with our volunteers and young people on this project. Oral health and regularly attending a dental check-up is so important for young people.

“It was also good to be able to get the young people’s feedback about their experiences of attending a dentist which will be shared with Public Health and the Oral Health Advisory Group to ensure that visiting the dentist is something children feel comfortable with and that services are young people friendly.”
