Barnsley Round Table donation provides boost for Hospice lymphoedema service

The lymphoedema service at Barnsley Hospice has been boosted thanks to a donation of almost £3,000 from the Barnsley Round Table.

The money, raised from the club’s annual bonfire event in the town’s Locke Park, has been used to buy specialist lymphoedema equipment to help patients living with the long-term condition.

Lymphoedema causes swelling in the body’s tissues and can be a side effect of cancer surgery. Barnsley Hospice offers a self-management and support service – the only specialist service of its kind in the borough.

The £2,899 donation from the Barnsley Round Table has enabled the charity to invest in a new pump and garment system to help reduce symptoms associated with lymphoedema and improve quality of life for patients.

The donation was made in memory of long-standing and highly supportive club member Roger Potts, who lived in Oxspring. Roger died in December 2018 after being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in December 2017.

Roger’s family visited the hospice last week to see the new equipment and hear how it will help patients. A spokesperson from the Barnsley Round Table said: “Roger was a fantastic member for many years, helping raise lots of money for the town he loved and donating to many good causes for Barnsley people.

“Roger is remembered as a great friend to many past and present Round Table members, and as a kind and very generous man. It was an honour to donate this money in his memory and we are proud to help make a difference to such an important charity within our community.”

Janet O’Hara, grants, trusts and legacies fundraiser at Barnsley Hospice, added: “We’re thrilled that the Round Table chose to support our charity, and this is a true example of money raised in the community being used to help others within it. The new equipment will make a big difference to our patients living with lymphoedema and we’d like to thank the club and everyone who supported their bonfire event in November last year.”

Barnsley MP completes London marathon in aid of local charity

Stephanie Peacock, MP for Barnsley East, completed the London Marathon in the capital on Sunday to raise money for local charity Barnsley Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Services (BSARCS).

The Member of Parliament joined over 42,000 runners along the famous course, crossing the finish line of her first ever marathon in just over six hours and reaching her target of £1,000.

BSARCS is the sole group in Barnsley the provides specialist services to people affected by sexual abuse, sexual assault, rape, and any kind of sexual violence. Working with women, men and children, they have helped around 1,500 people in the last year alone.

Said Stephanie: “Barnsley Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Services is a fantastic local charity that does incredible work for people in our community, and I’m so happy to have completed the marathon and helped raise funds for them.

“I’ve never run anywhere near 26 miles before, but the kindness of the crowds gathered along the route and generosity of those who have donated made the sore legs worth it – so thank you to everyone in Barnsley for your support.

“Though every step after around 15 miles hurt I took each one for BSARCS, and the thought of what a difference the donations will make to some of the most vulnerable people across Barnsley kept me going.”

Lynne Casserly, Development Manager at Barnsley Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Services, said: “We would like to thank Stephanie and everyone who has supported her in raising money for BSARCS.”

A winning header just before the hour mark at Oakwell has put the promotion ball very firmly back in Barnsley’s court.

While there are still several last-day permutations to be considered, the bottom line is, that if the Reds beat Bristol Rovers on their visit to the Memorial Stadium next Saturday, they will be back in the Championship at the first time of asking.

It was a day when everything went right for the Oakwell team – apart from the 15th minute when Blackpool silenced the larger than usual crowd by taking a shock lead. Table-topping Luton Town were beaten 2-1 at Burton Albion while the Reds’ two other main rivals, Sunderland and Portsmouth, also lost ground after sharing a point in a feisty 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light, which did not do either of them much good.

It means that Daniel Stendel’s side now share top spot with Luton and can now not only clinch promotion in their final match they could even snatch the title away from the Hatters, who had looked to have the championship sewn up until recent slips.

A thoroughly deserved victory also means that the Reds have gone through a season unbeaten at home for the first time since the 1967-68 campaign, when they won promotion from the old Fourth Division by finishing runners-up – to Luton Town!

Central defender Liam Lindsay, scorer of the all-important winner against Blackpool, revealed after the game that when Stendel arrived at the club in the summer he said he wanted to make Oakwell a fortress – and his team have done just that.

The man who has promotion within his grasp in his first season in charge was quick to point out, in his post-match meeting with the media, that a lot of people were to thank for that. “It is all down to teamwork,” he said. “We are all together. Manager, staff and supporters.”

He was delighted with his side’s performance on the day. “We played well – especially in the second half – we created chances, and we deserved to win the game.”

As for completing the job in a week’s time he reflected: “We celebrated today’s win even more when we heard the other results in the dressing room. One more win and we’re up. We have worked so hard all season, we just want to win that last one. Then we really can celebrate.”

The celebratory scenes when the players returned to the pitch to receive their traditional final home game of the season appreciation from the supporters – after a premature ‘invasion’ by a small number who ignored the plea to remain in their seats – seemed to suggest that the fans are convinced that nothing can stop the promotion dream from ending happily.

That is patently not the case. Defeat at Bristol and the Reds could be left to rely on their luck in the play-offs lottery!

There is still a job to do. Do it, and then we – I say that as a fan as well as a career-long reporter of the Reds’ ups and downs – really can celebrate.

There was little worthy of note in the opening quarter-of-an-hour against a Blackpool side who had nothing to play for – any chance of the play-offs had disappeared and they were safe from any relegation fears.

The Reds had already begun to dominate possession, but had not come close to creating a single clear-cut chance, while at the same time there was a huge moment of prophetic concern when Blackpool caught them in a three on two situation in a swift counter-attack and the home team were rescued by a misplaced final pass.

Shortly after that came the stunned silence when Armand Gnanduillet flicked on a cross to the unmarked Harry Pritchard, whose shot deflected off the unfortunate Jordan Williams, past the wrong-footed Adam Davies and into the net.

Barnsley needed an early goal to settle the nerves. Instead it had gone to Blackpool, who could now sit back, defend in numbers, challenge the opposition to break them down, and rely on more quick-fire breaks to open up the possibility of a second ‘killer’ goal.

It made the Reds’ task harder than it should have been, but at least they responded immediately to this ‘kick up the pants’, as Lindsay later described it, at least in terms of increased energy and determination if not an equaliser.

A cross from the marauding Williams, eager to atone for his frustrating part in the Blackpool opener, was headed over the bar from six yards by Mamadou Thiam; Mike Bahre had a shot blocked in a frantic goalmouth melee; Ethan Pinnock headed wide during a series of Barnsley corners; a right-footer from Cameron McGeehan swung just wide from 22 yards; a great long ball from Alex Mowatt sent Thiam scampering goalwards but the angle was too narrow and Christopher Mafoumbi saved.

All that Blackpool could offer amidst all this pressure was a header from Ben Heneghan which looped over the bar following a free-kick.

But then, five minutes before half-time, came the threatened breakthrough. Cauley Woodrow managed to find both time and space at the edge of a crowded penalty area to turn and fire the ball past the Blackpool goalkeeper for his 19th goal of the season, and there was an audible sigh of relief from the fans before they broke into congratulatory cheers.

The singing quickly followed, but that was silenced four minutes later when Jacob Brown, who has been excellent since cementing his place in the first team, went down injured for the second time and had to be substituted. The cheers returned when that substitute was seen to be striker Kieffer Moore, continuing his build-up of match fitness after a lengthy injury absence.

In the second half it was all Barnsley. Five minutes after the break they produced their best passing move of the game, which ended with a Woodrow shot being deflected for a flag kick, and shortly after that Mafoumbi leapt to his right to make a superb one-handed save from a Thiam curler which was bound for the top corner.

Then, just before the hour mark, the Reds finally made the most of their glut of corners – they had 13 in all. An inswinger from McGeehan was met with a sweetly-timed glancing header from Lindsay and as the ball rustled the back of the net there was a thunderous cry of ‘Yeeee- s’ from the home fans.

Almost immediately there was a chorus of ‘If you’re going up, stand up’ – and so they did.

It was almost a training ground session of attack v defence after that as the Reds swept forward, but they failed to add the third goal which would have made the closing stages a little more comfortable. Everyone knows that, in such a scenario, it needs only one counter-attack, one chance, or one defensive slip, to undo all the good work that has preceded it.

Such a moment came 15 minutes from time, but Davies, who had little to do all afternoon, was alert enough to make a routine save from Pritchard following a corner.

Otherwise all the action was at the other end, Bahre timing his run to perfection only to fire wide; Woodrow blazing over the bar after breaking free on the right; Moore managing to hoist the ball up and over from a couple of yards, and then bringing a good save from Mafoumbi.

The statistics emphasise Barnsley’s dominance. They had 57 per cent of the possession; they had 22 attempts at goal to Blackpool’s five; they hit the target with six of them, while the visitors managed only two; and the corner count was a remarkable 13-1 in favour of the Reds.

They had enough chances to have more than doubled their advantage, but will be more than happy with the two goals they did score – not to mention the three points which accompanied them.

Barnsley MP campaigning to increase maximum dangerous driving sentence after death of local woman

Member of Parliament for Barnsley East, Stephanie Peacock, will meet with Government officials to continue the push to increase the maximum sentence for death by dangerous driving following the tragic death of Jacqueline Wileman.

In September last year, a HGV was stolen and driven around Barnsley and crashed into a property in Brierley, but not before tragically hitting and killing Barnsley resident Jacqueline Wileman.

The four men responsible were convicted of death by dangerous driving amongst other charges and existing criminal convictions. Each received between 10 and 13 years in prison, but will likely serve fewer.

In an exchange in the House of Commons, Stephanie (pictured) questioned Ministry of Justice Minister Rory Stewart on the issue.

She challenged the Minister on the ‘devastating failure’ of the Government’s privatised probation system that saw three of the four men convicted of Jacqueline Wileman’s death commit the crime whilst released on probation.

Following this, she asked the Minister to meet with her to discuss the case and what they can do to prevent similar incidents – including scrapping the 14-year maximum sentence for death by dangerous driving.

Responding for the Government, Minister Stewart paid tribute to the local MP for her campaigning on the case and accepted that the maximum sentence should be increased to life.

He further agreed to meet the MP to discuss changing this law.

Said Stephanie: “The death of Jacqueline Wileman was a tragic incident that struck at the very heart of our community and devastated many.

“In the face of lenient prison sentences handed down to those responsible, Jackie’s family have bravely campaigned to make sure nobody else must go through what they have.

“After bringing this campaign to Parliament, I’m delighted the Government have accepted the need to increase the sentence and I will look to meet them urgently and make sure that is the case.”

Barnsley MP signs miners’ pension letter to Chancellor

Stephanie Peacock, MP for Barnsley East, has signed and supported a letter to the Chancellor of the Exchequer which calls for a formal review of the Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme.

The current arrangement sees the Government acting as guarantor for mineworker pension pay-outs, with surpluses made by the scheme split evenly between its members and the Treasury.

Since the agreement was struck in 1994, the Government has taken around £4.4bn from the scheme without paying in a single penny of their own. This includes £617m this year alone, with another £427m planned over the next three years.

Stephanie recently held a parliamentary debate on the issue, pressing Government business ministers in the House of Commons to review the 50:50 surplus sharing arrangement, and now she has joined a number of other Labour MPs in signing a letter to the Chancellor, asking the Treasury to do the same.

In the letter, the signatories stated: “The strong returns generated by the scheme combined with the absence of direct payments from the Government make the continued withdrawal of a 50% share for the current arrangement difficult to justify.

“We call on the Government both to include a stronger level of protection for members’ bonuses as part of the guarantee and to consider taking a reduced share of the surplus to allow a greater proportion to be returned to mineworkers.

“To this end, we would request that HM Treasury undertake a formal review of the surplus sharing arrangements, the case for reform and means of enhancing existing bonuses along with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.”

Said Stephanie: “I’ve long voiced my opposition to the current surplus sharing arrangement in the Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme that has seen the Government pocket billions without paying in a penny of their own.

“Miners here in Barnsley, who spent years working hard for security in later life should not be forced to get by on a pittance as this Government continues to take money from the scheme.

“I’ll continue fighting to get a fairer deal for miners and a greater share of the funds from their pension pot.”

First half blitz keeps Reds in automatic promotion place with two matches to go

Three goals in the space of a blistering 13-minute first half spell added new impetus to Barnsley’s hopes of clinching the second automatic promotion place.

In recent games the Reds have been well below their best, despite churning out the right results, but at Home Park they produced a huge helping of Devon cream to consolidate their runners-up spot behind champions elect Luton Town with a third successive victory, roared joyously on by nearly a thousand travelling fans.

This was the kind of clinical performance which had characterised their play in the earlier part of the campaign and it is no exaggeration to say that they would have doubled the margin of victory but for a series of outstanding saves by former Barnsley goalkeeper Kyle Letheren.

Barnsley made just one change from the team which had beaten Shresbury at Oakwell three days earlier, Liam Lindsay returning after injury in place of Adam Jackson, and there was a hint in the eighth minute of what was to come, Letheren doing well to turn away a Cauley Woodrow shot which was destined for the bottom corner.

Seven minutes later the ‘keeper was left with no chance when Woodrow left-footed the ball low and true into the net from just inside the penalty area after fastening on to a superb crossfield pass from full-back Jordan Wiliams.

After Yann Songo’o had gone close for Argyle the Reds took a similar diagonal route to goal in the 22nd minute, this time from left to right, Dani Pinillos providing the pass and Jordan Brown the smart finish.

The three points were virtually in the bag six minutes later when a handball just outside the area provided Alex Mowatt with the opportunity to curl a delightful free-kick into the top corner.

A shell-shocked Plymouth simply had no answer to the wave of attacks and they were prevented from falling even further behind by another first class save from Letheren, diving to turn a bullet of a shot from Pinillos round the post for a fruitless corner.

The second half was all about game management as far as the Reds were concerned. They played keep-ball for long spells to deny the home team any possible opportunity to find a way back, but at the same time continued to keep Letheren busy.

He pulled off a good save from Mamadou Thiam and then an even better one from the same player as the ball curled towards the top corner. Next to be denied was the outstanding Mike Bahre and substitute Ryan Hedges suffered a similar fate as the goalkeeper continued his man-of-the-match brilliance.

Kieffer Moore, on as substitute for Thiam in the 69th minute, was soon in the thick of things as usual, but showed a little rustiness after his injury lay-off, twice wasting chances created for him by another substitute, Callum Styles, first shooting wide and then ballooning the ball over the bar from 12 yards.

However, all in all it was a decisive statement of intent as the Reds go into the last two fixtures still locked in a titanic battle with Sunderland and Portsmouth for the automatic promotion prize.

As they went into the Plymouth game they were already aware that Pompey had fought back from being a goal down at Fratton Park to beat Coventry City 2-1 in the lunchtime encounter, but the good news filtering through to the dressing room after the final whistle was that Sunderland had been held to a 1-1 draw on their visit to Peterborough.

The upshot was that the Reds remain in second spot with 88 points, two points behind Luton; Portsmouth are now third, with 86 points, and Sunderland are fourth with 84.

Both Portsmouth and Sunderland have a game in hand – away to Fleetwood Town and at home to Peterborough respectively next Tuesday night  – but before that, these two teams clash at Roker Park on Saturday, while the Reds entertain Blackpool at Oakwell.

Everything still points to a nerve-wracking final day on the fourth of May.
