New Hospice charity shop opens in Hoyland

Barnsley Hospice has opened a brand-new charity shop in Hoyland.

Situated on King Street, and officially opened by Barnsley Mayor Cllr Steve Green (see picture), becomes the hospice’s sixth charity shop in the Borough.

The charity took over the former Cooplands Bakery in early September, and the last few weeks have been spent transforming the building. A modern, industrial, minimalist design sets it apart from the other hospice shops in Barnsley.

Four volunteers have been recruited to work in the new shop, which sells a range of premium items from well-known brands, alongside other high quality, but low priced, second-hand clothing and accessories. Homeware, books and children’s toys are also available.

Stephen Hatfield, retail manager at Barnsley Hospice, said: “We’ve had a great reaction from the local community since we announced the new shop was opening. Hoyland is an untapped area for the hospice but we know people who live here have been touched by the work we do and want to support us.

“Charity shops are enjoying a comeback at the moment – they don’t have the stigma they used to have and people are proud to find bargains now. Because of this, we chose a modern design to turn the traditional perception of a charity shop on its head.”

Barnsley Hospice’s shops play a vital role in generating income for the charity, which has to raise £2.2m a year, in addition to a £1.6m grant from the NHS CCG.

Each year, the shops collectively generate around £675,000 and the new shop in Hoyland is expected to contribute a further £100,000.

Volunteer Leslie Hodgson is part of the new team and she said: “The new shop is fantastic. It’s completely different to all the other hospice shops.

“I’ve worked as a volunteer for the hospice for four years and in that time I’ve met customers that have become friends. I’m really looking forward to getting started here because I enjoy meeting new people and giving something back.”

There are five other Barnsley Hospice shops: at Wombwell, Penistone, and three in the town centre. A donation centre at Dodworth acts as a drop-off point and warehouse, and also houses three retail outlets selling electricals, clothes, DVDs, CDs, vinyl records and books.
