New Hospice charity shop opens in Cudworth

Barnsley Hospice has opened a brand-new charity shop in Cudworth.

The store on Barnsley Road (pictured)was officially opened by chief executive Julie Ferry on Wednesday 20 February. It becomes the hospice’s seventh charity shop in Barnsley.

The charity took over the former Barnsley Animal Rescue Charity shop in January, and the last few weeks have been spent transforming the building. A reworked design with a large window space sets it apart from the other hospice outlets in Barnsley.

Volunteers have been recruited to help in the new shop, which sells a range of premium items from well-known brands, alongside other high quality, but low priced, second-hand clothing and accessories. Books, homeware, furniture and children’s toys are also available.

Stephen Hatfield, retail manager at Barnsley Hospice, said: “The shop is in a fantastic position as a corner plot and the first one you see on the high street as you come into Cudworth. The area has been on our radar for quite a while because it opens the hospice up to parts of Barnsley where we haven’t had any presence.

“A lot of work has gone into redesigning the building – anyone who saw it before will be amazed at how different it looks now. We’re taking advantage of the window space by having a large presence of furniture as well as the usual items.”

Barnsley Hospice’s shops play a vital role in generating income for the charity, which must raise £2.2m a year, in addition to a £1.6m grant from the NHS CCG.

Each year, the shops collectively generate around £675,000 and the new store in Cudworth is expected to contribute a further £100,000 per year.

Anne Watson is the new manager of the Cudworth shop. She said: “It’s been stressful to get the shop ready for opening, but it looks fantastic and I can’t wait to get started.

“I’m looking forward to and getting to know local people making everyone feel welcome – that’s the best part of the job.”

There are six other Barnsley Hospice shops; at Hoyland, Penistone, Wombwell, and three in the town centre. A donation centre at Dodworth acts as a drop-off point and warehouse, and also houses three retail outlets selling electricals, clothes, DVDs, CDs, vinyl records and books.

Barnsley Hospice provides specialist care for anyone in the borough with a life-limiting illness, including cancer, motor neurone disease and heart disease. It has ten beds for inpatient care and provides day care at the on-site Limes Support and Therapy Centre.
